American Idol Spins Lil Rounds, Anoop Desai Off the Stage

Let it be known that the judges didn't just prolong the inevitable last week.
More than 45 million votes were cast Monday and the voters apparently thought better of Matt Giraud—despite his not all that great rendition of "Stayin' Alive," they threw enough support in his corner to put him in the Top Five.
But when one is saved, two must be sacrificed.
Or so went this season's new rule, which mandated that the American Idol judges could save one otherwise out-of-luck contestant whom they felt deserved another chance. But as Matt's fellow hopefuls rallied around him last week, they knew full well that two heads would roll tonight.
Disco night played host to several truly great performances, leaving little room for error among the quickly dwindling group.
And the love ran out for Lil Rounds, who after several imitative performances in a row was finally given her walking papers. To her credit, she sang the guts out of "I'm Every Woman" after hearing the bad, yet probably unsurprising, news—an encore that elicited a "Why didn't you sing like that last night?!" from Paula Abdul.
Also finished is Anoop Desai, who also went out on a far stronger version of "Dim All the Lights" than the one he offered up yesterday.
Meanwhile, Matt joined the yet-to-hurt trio of Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, none of whom have been in the bottom three to date. (Although that obviously changes now that there are only five left.)
And in case you hadn't done the math yet, Allison Iraheta is still in it to win it—barely. The 16-year-old again inexplicably found herself among the lesser vote getters. (Maybe the problem's the white patent-leather platforms, because it certainly shouldn't be her pipes.)
With two contestants getting the boot, there wasn't too much time for pleasantries, but the judges told each castoff that "this is only the beginning."
David Archuleta, proof that the journey doesn't end if you don't win and that being the so-called frontrunner week after week doesn't guarantee a victory, stopped by to perform "Touch My Hand."

Lindsay Thought Breakup With Sam "Would Be So Much Harder"

Contrary to what you probably think, Lindsay Lohan did not get into acting to make headlines and acquire a paparazzi entourage.
"I didn't get into this business to be a celebrity on the cover of tabloids and I've been a target and I'm not that interesting," the 22-year-old actress insisted during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show airing tomorrow.
"It distracts people—studio heads, everyone, and they get nervous. I've been through a lot. I was 19 years old when things happened and I'm ready to work. I'm responsible and I can be on time and I learn from my mistakes."
Insisting that "everything fell into place" recently, Lohan says that she's ready to refocus on her career, now that she's single again following a breakup that apparently took her completely by surprise.
"I had no idea what was going on," Lohan recalled of the days leading up to her admission to E! News that she and girlfriend Samantha Ronson were taking a break. "I just hadn't seen her in like a week. She like, disappeared."
But the split was not due to her roving eye or anything like that, Lohan said, as she began disproving her own comment about not being interesting.
"I don't believe in cheating on someone," said the star of the upcoming comedy Labor Pains.
Lohan and DeGeneres also commiserated about having to deal with breakups under the glare of the public eye.
"I kind of lost my career for a little while and I went away," DeGeneres said, presumably referring to parting ways with Anne Heche in 2000. "I went to Ojai, California. I stayed away for three years and I literally hibernated and got myself back together. Do you feel like you want to run away?" she asked Lohan.
To which the actress replied, not really.
"I feel like I want to get my career back in shape," Lohan said. "There are some shows I'm producing that I'm really excited about. I'm doing a movie in October. So it's been nice to just kind of...You know when people are together so much it gets really difficult and you forget who you are because you're more concerned about being with the other person.
"I think [the breakup has] been really good for me. I thought it would be so much harder and it hasn't been...I’ve had great people surrounding me and I’ve just been working every single day. "

Are You Proud to Be an American Idol Viewer?

Did your fellow countrymen and women do you proud tonight?

American Idol played host to a double elimination that, while if not entirely shocking, really hammered home the fact that we're in the home stretch—only four weeks to go until the May 20 finale

So, to quote T-Mobile, who's in your fave five? And are they the same ones who will perform next week?

Once you know which two contestants were cast aside tonight, do weigh in on the pair of boots by taking our poll.

30 Days of Night Director David Slade Stares Into Twlight's Eclipse

David Slade knows darkness. And now he gets to shed light on what happens after New Moon.

The director of 30 Days of Night and the teen revenge thriller Hard Candy has been tapped to helm the third film in the vampire-romance franchise, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

After New Moon director Chris Weitz let it be known that he would be one and done, various names arose as possibilities to direct the adaptation of the third book in Stephenie Meyers' bestselling young-adult novel series, including Weitz's brother, Paul; Guillermo del Toro protégé Juan Antonio Bayona; James Mangold and Drew Barrymore.

But in the end, Summit Entertainment went with a guy who certainly knows his monsters, of both the human and otherworldly variety.

"I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing Eclipse," Meyer said in a statement Wednesday. "He's a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise."

Added Summit president of production Erik Feig: "Stephenie Meyer's Eclipse is a muscular, rich, vivid book and we at Summit looked long and hard for a director who could do it justice. We believe we have found that talent in David Slade, a director who has been able to create complex, visually arresting worlds."

While we're still waiting on New Moon, that doesn't mean we can't start looking forward to Eclipse, which is due in theaters in summer 2010.

No Dog-Eat-Dog World for Star Trek's Canine Heirs

Before she died, the widow of the man who created Star Trek boldly went where few have gone before.

Into Leona Helmsley territory.

Gene Roddenberry's wife, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, an actress who also served as the voice of the USS Enterprise's computer, set up a nifty little multimillion-dollar trust for her beloved pooches to ensure that they would remain in the lap of luxury after she was gone.

According to probate documents obtained by E! News, Roddenberry set aside $4 million so that her dogs could go on living in one of her mansions, while their longtime caretaker, Reinelda Estupinian, gets $1 million and residential rights in the expansive home.

"I do not want the animals to be placed in a kennel or other boarding facility," Majel stated, adding that she also wished for her trustees to hire someone to check up on the dogs periodically, "to be certain that they are being cared for properly (as I cared for them during my lifetime)."

But there's no need to weep for her human heirs. Roddenberry left $100 million to her 35-year-old son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr., to be paid out in installments, and the special lady in his life has permission to borrow Majel's jewelry.

Gene Roddenberry died in 1991. Both his and Majel's ashes are set to be rocket-launched into orbit sometime next year.

Is Miss California the New Joe the Plumber?

Now that Miss California has spoken out against gay marriage, is she the next Joe the Plumber or what?—Heather, Butte, Mont.
If you're asking whether anti-gay-marriage groups have wrapped their Jesus-lovin' arms around Carrie Prejean's perfectly tanned spine, the answer is: They certainly are trying.
"She's gotten several requests to speak from statewide pro-marriage-and-family groups," her (brand-spankin' new) spokeswoman just told me.
Uppity-ups in the Republican party also tell me Prejean definitely will be approached by some arm of theirs, though whether she'll be game is another story. She may be too busy suing Donald Trump or (possibly) dating Michael Phelps to participate...
Prejean also wants to make sure she isn't pigeonholed into the gay-marriage issue alone, her spokeswoman said.
"She wants to speak more for standing up for what you believe in, rather than any specific issue," the spokeswoman told me. "She just wants young people to be strong in their beliefs and not let culture sway them."
I've also learned that conservative group Focus on the Family, lead by James Dobson, is dying to reach her.
"Dr. Dobson would very much like to speak with her, at least privately," a Focus spokesman tells me. "There are some efforts going on to see if we can connect the two of them."
Most pageant queens never make it to the speaking circuit. And, Sarah Palin notwithstanding, most certainly don't get recruited by political parties.
Instead, pageant interview coach Justin Rudd tells me, they usually just take on careers as models—Tamiko Nash presented for The Price Is Right for a while—or "they may go back and judge other pageants, or get married and settle down."
If a beauty queen does become a speaker, it's usually over some noncontroversial issue, like former Miss America Kirsten Haglund, who crusades against anorexia. (I know of no major political group that is pro-starvation.)
"I will guarantee you that the Republican party is going to embrace her," says former Arizona attorney general Grant Woods, who was John McCain's first chief of staff. "I haven't talked to anyone in the party about it yet, but I guarantee you, they will."

Jerry Seinfeld: Whats The Deal With Reunion

Jerry Seinfeld always brings the funny.

The E! News cameras caught up with the comedian as he came out of The Grill on the Alley in Beverly Hills Wednesday afternoon.

“I don’t think my publicist set this up,” joked Seinfeld while chewing on a toothpick.

Check out the video for his comments on Larry David, the Seinfeld cast reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm and the new Yankee stadium.

Audrina Saving The Puppies

• The still life painting to left is PETA's rendering of Audrina Patridge as a Victoria's Secret Angel/puppy savior.

• Rachel Bilson is going to start playing fashion editor at In Style, but don't worry. She says, "I am not planning on quitting my day job to be a full-time fashion editor." Hee hee, what's her day job?

• Jennifer Lopez is wandering around New York City with some bad bangs talking about that triathlon she completed last August to prove her body is more than a baby temple. Someone get her something real to promote.

• Jim Carrey knows how to cause Internet drama.

• Michael Phelps and Miss California are really the most perfect opposite match ever.

• Jack Black and Michael Cera have a son.

Idol Does Disco, Some Boogie Better Than Others

It was back to the old American Idol ball game Tuesday, with all four judges getting to comment on each performance—which was great for some and not at all good for others—as the still intact Top Seven waded through the sounds of Studio 54, Saturday Night Fever and Donna Summer's greatest hits.

Meaning, they sang disco-era tunes.

Best of all, besides the musical magic worked here and there, there were no lengthy interludes between performances. It went song, critique, song, critique...and so on.
That's still a lot to squeeze into one hour, however, so here we go, starting with Lil Round's swan song opening number...

Well, Lil made "I'm Every Woman" her own. Her own lesser version of Chaka Khan's empowerment anthem, anyway. Could she pick song arrangements that sound more like the original versions? Perhaps the 23-year-old, sensing she's probably on her way out with tomorrow's double elimination, just wanted to have some fun. And there's always the Las Vegas staple Legends in Concert if the original-artist thing doesn't work out. "I'm glad you had fun, because I think this is the last week we're ever going to see you," said mind-reader Simon Cowell.

Kris Allen: It was Donna Summer by way of Jason Mraz when Kris strummed out a nearly acoustic, bongo-utilizing version of "She Works Hard for the Money." Very interesting choice and, not surprisingly, a very pleasant performance. The arrangement was a little easy-listening but...hey, last we checked, easy-listening tunes made money. He really rocked the plain white tee, though. "I am so impressed with you," gushed Kara DioGuardi, while Simon called his "a complete polar opposite to the first performance." Paula Abdul said Kris' tune had "a classy Santana feel to it," and Randy Jackson remarked, "You're ready for the big time, dawg."
Danny Gokey: Speaking of original arrangements...That wasn't what Danny offered up with his pretty spot-on rendition of Earth, Wind and Fire's "September." Yeah, he's a great singer, and he proves it every week. But does anyone else find him a tad boring? Three out of four judges would say no (Paula even called his voice "one of the sexiest…ever"). But Simon is still underwhelmed by the 27-year-old's stage presence. "Can't fault the vocals…As a performance, though, I didn't get any star power from that," he said.

Allison Iraheta: The arrangement of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" did a disservice to the little one at times, and the 16-year-old was wearing another of her funked-up outfits—but we love Allison, and there was still plenty to love about this performance. Randy, too, felt the arrangement "a little overindulgent," but he had nothing but love for her. "From a singing perspective, that was like a 9, 10 for me," Kara said. "Taking everything into account, that was a brilliant performance," Simon concluded.

Adam Lambert: Disco night wouldn't be complete without a Bee Gees tune. And being the consummate pro that he already is, Adam wouldn't hear of such a thing. Knowing the brothers Gibb—or original vocalist Yvonne Elliman—were no slouches at hitting high notes, he sang the sprightly "If I Can't Have You" as a slow, wistful ballad that brought tears to Paula's eyes. "It's as if you tore your heart out and left it on the stage," she said, adding, "You're brilliant, you're awesome and you will be in the finals." Simon wasn't quite so bowled over, but he called Adam's vocal "immaculate."

Matt Giraud: Kudos to him for keeping those lyrics straight, but Matt's decision to do "Stayin' Alive" may not have been the wisest choice. The second half kicked the first half's behind, though, as the extraordinarily lucky, fedora-topped contestant started breaking it down and injecting a little non-Airplane-reminiscent soul into the soundtrack staple. "Not crazy original, but solid," Kara said. Paula was convinced Matt is through to next week based on his performance, but Simon rained on the comeback parade. "That came off to me as a bit desperate," he said.

Anoop Desai: Yet another dude doing Donna, Anoop straddled the line between ballad and disco beat—and we're not sure he ended up on the right side of either. Randy, Kara and Paula gushed over his singing ability—and Paula was absolutely right when she said (more or less) that stubble was a good look for him—but Simon thought it "mediocre at best." His contrary panning of the performance left Anoop's parents, who were sitting in the audience, sharing a laugh of disbelief.
American Idol will be down to five following a double elimination on Wednesday's show, which will also feature a performance by season-seven wunderkind David Archuleta.

According to America's Line oddsmaker Benjamin Eckstein, there's even money on Anoop getting dismissed tomorrow, while Lil is a 2-to-1 favorite. Matt isn't exactly in the clear at 5 to 1.

The Hills Scoop Speidi Wedding Sex Tape

The Hills were alive with episode spoilers, Speidi wedding gossip and talk of a possible sixth season with or without Lauren Conrad at tonight's Paley Fest '09 panel.
Lauren hit the carpet and podium along with her castmates Brody Jenner, Audrina Patridge, Whitney Port, Lo Bosworth and Stephanie Pratt, but Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were last-minute no-shows. Spencer's sis Stephanie told the crowd that the couple, whose weekend wedding is being filmed as the show's season finale, were in the "studio, making hit music."
Find out who got invited to the wedding and who didn't, who's going and who's skipping it and what (not so) shocking revelation comes out on an upcoming episode of The Hills. Read on…
Lauren's Big Spoiler Alert: When asked if she still believes that it was Spencer who spread the rumor that she made a sex tape, Lauren said, "We have it on tape that he [Spencer] takes responsibility for it. Sorry. Spoiler!" Can't wait for that episode to come!
Executive Producer Liz Gateley on a Sixth Season: "We're in talks and seeing if there is enough story to continue it. We hope if we do, Lauren will miss it so much she'll want to come back."
Brody on a Lauren-less Hills: "The Hills is Lauren. If it goes, yes I would be a part of it. Hopefully, Lauren would come back somehow. It may die with Lauren; it may not."
Stephanie on Being a Speidi Bridesmaid: "I've never been to a wedding before. I know that Holly is in it. I'm hoping that she is Maid of Honor because I will screw everything up. I don't know if you watched any of the Kelly Cutrone scenes, but I'm really not good at following direction." On pre-wedding festivities: "I don't think Spencer is allowed to have a bachelor party. Holly and I are throwing around the idea of having a bridal shower before…I just hope no one objects [at the wedding]."
Brody on Heidi and Spencer: "I will just be attending the wedding and maybe sitting with Lauren and possibly my girlfriend and just kind of watching and taking it in. They are both pretty crazy. But, who isn't crazy? I think they just work together. They seem to click and that's all that matters. Obviously it works out for them and I'm happy for them." On wedding plans with girlfriend Jayde: "We're not rushing into anything. We're not like Spencer and Heidi."
Lauren on Not Attending: "I'm not planning on going, no. It was very nice of her to invite me, but she didn't really expect me to go."
Lo on Heidi and Spencer's Union: "I think they really love each other. They may be quirky in some ways, but they are perfect for each other and at the end of the day that's what's important." (Lo also says she's not bringing a date to the wedding because her invite didn't say "plus guest.")
Audrina on Her Alleged Brody Hookup: "Brody and I are just friends…And, there is definitely a lot more drama with Justin and I to come [on the show]."
Whitney's Second Season of The City: "I'm still filming in New York, but we are making some changes. Possibly a job change, yes." When asked about leaving Diane von Furstenberg, she says, "Nothing happened. There are no hard feelings. I want to try different things." (Whitney, by the way, was not invited to the Speidi wedding.)

Jill Scott Delivers No.1 Son

Yet another Precious milestone for Jill Scott.
The R&B songstress and fiancé Lil' John Roberts welcomed their first child together Monday, son Jett Hamilton Roberts.

Jett was born at 4:20 p.m. (on 4-20, incidentally) and entered this world weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

Scott, who's currently earning rave reviews for her role as Botswanan detective Precious Ramotswe in HBO's adaptation of novelist Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, revealed that she was expecting during the Television Critics Association convention in January.

"The first trimester I spent in Botswana," the three-time Grammy winner said.

Dancing Down to Six Stars

Elimination Tuesday turned into a world premiere for six aspiring hopefuls. And we don't mean the celebrity sextet that remains after another Dancing With the Stars elimination.
ABC, already gearing up for the hit show's ninth season this fall, has introduced a new competition-within-a-competition that pits a group of international ballroom champs against each other in a bid to become the next Julianne, Maksim or Cheryl.
But the main attraction at the DWTS arcade was still whack-a-star, and that's what you came to see...

It was fourth and goal for Lawrence Taylor, and the NFL Hall of Famer was sacked before he could gain any more yardage.

"I have to tell you, this has been a great experience," the 50-year-old ex-linebacker said. "I gotta thank Dancing With the Stars and ABC for really such a lovely partner...[Edyta Sliwinska has] taught me everything I know about dancing. I don't know where the hell I'm gonna use it..."
So apparently he's not going to be hitting up the underground salsa scene with Emmitt Smith and Warren Sapp anytime soon.

"I want all my boys to know back in Miami—I'll be on the practice range at 9 o'clock," Taylor said. "Tee-off is at 9:30."

Before the show said toodaloo to L.T., Ty Murray was the last cowboy to be plucked from the pile, a reminder that a respectable 24 isn't high enough to guarantee safety at this point in the competition—although it doesn't necessarily mean he was in the bottom two.
Chuck Wicks was the first to be declared safe. He and real-life love Julianne Hough earned their highest-ever score—and tied Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke!—last night with a sufficiently spicy salsa.
Also good to go on are Shawn Johnson, Melissa Rycroft and Lil' Kim.
Meanwhile, over the next four weeks, we can vote by phone and online for the dancers (who will be strutting their stuff during the elimination shows) we'd like to see join the show as pros next season.

One of them will win a guaranteed spot opposite one of the stars.
The subset of contestants includes Genya Mazo, brother of season-one champ Alec Mazo; Afton DelGrosso, of the DelGrosso dance dynasty; and the aptly named Snow Urbin of Siberia. And since they all obviously know their way around a ballroom, they've got to impress with personality and pizzazz. (Being hot will not hurt.)

The competition's down to six, meaning there are only two more weeks to go before the semifinals. Boy, the time really toe-heels away from you sometimes...

Rihanna: Ready to Hit the Road?

Is Rihanna going on a girls-only road trip?
We just got word that the singer is planning a North American tour.
A source insists that the "Disturbia" songstress hopes to kick things off in September. Details of exactly where and when are still being worked on, but our source says that Rihanna may not be alone when she hits the road...
Ciara and Keyshia Cole are in negotiations to join the tour, according to the source. "Rihanna wants strong women to join her," the source says. "This is a 'women empowerment' type of tour."
Just last week, E! News confirmed the star will make her first solo stage appearance since her altercation with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, next month in Dubai.
Shortly after the Grammy Eve incident, Rihanna canceled a Feb. 13 concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her last concert was Jan. 29 in L.A.
Rihanna's rep did not immediately comment, nor did Ciara's. Coles' rep insists she's not in talks to join Rihanna because she is busy working on several other projects, including her own headlining tour.

No Testifying in Britney's Future; Other Side Says She's "Crying Out for Help"

Though obviously fit to be the family cash cow, Britney Spears still doesn't have the goods to testify in open court.

The pop star will not be required to take the stand in her conservatorship's ongoing quest to obtain permanent restraining orders against her former manager Sam Lutfi and attorney Jon Eardley, who unsuccessfully filed several motions last year challenging Jamie Spears' conservatorship over his daughter's affairs.

"There was a finding of a judge of the Superior Court that she lacks the capacity to testify," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aviva K. Bobb said after hearing closing arguments Tuesday, upholding a 14-month-old ruling that Spears isn't mentally fit to make her own legal decisions.

The temporary restraining orders against all three men were extended until April 28, when the judge will hear rebuttal arguments before making a final decision.

Eardley's attorney, Roger Diamond, filed a motion April 10 to compel Spears to testify before closing arguments were made, but there was no sign of her at the courthouse today.

It's unclear whether the 27-year-old singer, who just played four dates in L.A. and Anaheim, is still in SoCal at the moment. Her Circus tour touches down in Oakland Wednesday night.

In his remarks today, Diamond argued that Spears wanted Eardley—who is said to have collaborated with Lutfi last year to help Spears fight what was then a brand-new conservatorship—to help extricate her from Jamie Spears' control.

"Britney Spears is crying out for help," Diamond said.

Lutfi attorney Bryan Freedman, taking a somewhat less-contentious approach, said that there was "a lack of evidence as to emotional distress" to Britney perpetrated by his client.

Whatever, the Spears' legal camp said, calling the two men "predators."
